TRWBM: 2006.69 – sample catalogue of Sunday School Anniversary Music, printed by James Broadbent and Son Ltd., Boston Spa, Yorks, late of 13 Brunswick Place, Leeds
A Sunday school is an educational institution, usually Christian and intended for children or neophytes (adult convert). Sunday school classes usually precede a Sunday church service and are used to provide catechesis (religious instruction given with a catechism in preparation for Christian baptism or confirmation) to Christians, especially children and teenagers, and sometimes adults as well. Robert Raikes, who was a reformer from Gloucester, is generally seen to be the founder of the Sunday School movement. It was in 1781 that he first rounded up the local children on a Sunday and arranged from them to be taught in the local school.By the mid 18th century non-conformist membership was on the rise. The Sunday School Society was formed in London in 1785, it provided information and free text books to newly formed schools.
Trowbridge had a large number of Sunday Schools: Wesleyan, Conigre, Bethesda, St Thomas’s, Wesley Road, Back Street Baptist, Holy Trinity, Zion, Providence Chapel, Manvers Street and lots more! We have a great deal of objects related to these schools – from fine china to banners, prayers books and photographs.
