Photo of evacuees –
I find it so amazing to see such a historic moment in a setting I am so familiar with. So often when we think of evacuees during the Second World War we think of people leaving London or scenes of large scale evacuations in Europe. We are much less likely to think about where these evacuees ended up and we probably don’t think at all about the evacuees in the places we live. These images are so special because this is our own town, our own streets and it makes it that little bit more personal to see. This particular photograph is of students from Middle School Islington in London being evacuated to Trowbridge train station in 1939.
