Trowbridge Museum and Art Gallery- bigger and better!

Courtfield House, 18th Century brick built clothier's house with Georgian frontage

We want to highlight Trowbridge’s nationally important collection of items relating to the woollen cloth industry, including only one of five Spinning Jennies in the world. This machine, on loan from the Science Museum but originally from the town, was one of the most significant developments of the Industrial Revolution. Unlike many museums with industrial machinery, we still have the skills to operate our two looms and will be able to run them more often in the new premises as well as improve their  display and interpretation.

With outside space, the Museum can provide more facilities for families and host outdoor events. There will be free parking within walking distance and on-site parking for disabled visitors and for coaches. The grounds include an orchard of scientifically important apple trees. We are also told that fairies have been spotted in the garden!

With more ground floor exhibition space, access will be easy for everyone and many more of the items generously given to the Museum over the years can be displayed. One new exhibit will be a reconstruction of Aplins Chemists Shop, to be done in the same style as the popular Taylors the Drapers. We also hope to tell the story of minority groups in Trowbridge, reveal more about the early history and archaeology of the town and create exciting interactive displays on the town’s buildings, the surrounding parishes and the parts played by local people in the two World Wars.

Other advantages of moving to the new site include the chance to feature more Living History events, the provision of research facilities for local and family historians and the creation of pleasant meeting spaces for community groups and visitors. These are just some of the many plans we have come up with for our new Museum and Art Gallery. Please visit our site regularly for updates on this exciting project and feel free to share your ideas with us for what YOU would like to see in the new location.
